HackerTray is an open source, free and simple desktop application, a panel applet (indicator) for the world’s most popular free operating system, Ubuntu Linux, providing a real-time feed of the top stories from the Hacker News website in your system tray. HackerTray features a minimalist user interface for displaying the latest Hacker News articles, allows users to open links in their default web browser, keeps track of opened links, and displays comment and points count in a simple format. The application is inspired by the Hacker Bar utility for the Mac OS X operating system, and also provides support for the fallback mode in case AppIndicator is not available.
