The Addon Update Checker add-on adds a Tools menu item, so that you can update your favorite add-on when you want and not when your browser decides to do so. if you change options while in the 'checking' or 'found update' states, the icon will be grey until the next check/restart. If the icon is hidden you won't be able to move it off a toolbar - set options to always show to move it. The Addon Update Checker add-on does not know anything about the built in Add-on version checker. In other words, Firefox may check for updates and find one, but the icon for this add-on won't change until the next time the add-on checks. The Addon Update Checker add-on sets "extensions.update.autoUpdateDefault" to false. Otherwise is won't show the add-ons that can be updated - and breaks. If you uninstall this add-on and want to change it back, you can get to the pref from about:config, or on the Add-ons Manager click the gear drop down near the search box. Select "Update Add-ons Automatically" to change to Firefox default.The Addon Update Checker add-on is cross-platform and it works on Mac OS X, Windows and Linux.
