Matthew Poole (1624 - 1679) was a Nonconformist theologian from England. He was born at York and educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He was awarded a BA and then a MA at Oxford. Poole was a jure divino presbyterian, and an authorized defender of the views on ordination of the London provincial assembly. As a preacher he was perhaps only rivaled by Matthew Henry. Poole's insightful commentary continues to be a trusted resource for preachers and laypeople.
