LanTopolog Description

LanTopolog is a network monitoring tool whose purpose is to help you automatically discover a physical network topology based on SNMP connections. Multi-tabbed layout The GUI is made up of several tabs that allow you to configure the monitoring process in three steps and preview the topology with the aid of a browser (the info can also be viewed in your default web browser). Set up network topology in three stepsFirstly, LanTopolog gives you the possibility to specify the ranges of IP addresses for switch discovery (e.g. 10.10.10.230-250) and enter the SNMP community string. In addition, you are allowed to discover switches within all ranges or only within the selected ranges. The utility is able to check that all switches of the network segments you want to monitor are present within the list of discovered devices. At the end of the discovery mode, you can view a list with details about the IP address, SNMP sysName and SNMP sysLocation. The second step is used for collecting SNMP data from switches, more specifically information about the IP address, SNMP sysName, number of bridge ports, MAC address, and number of learned MACs. The third option allows you to compare the discovered topology with the actual one. Importing/exporting optionsYou may add custom data to the network map from CSV files, set the width for each column to see on the network map, and exclude certain columns from showing. Plus, the app lets you import columns containing MAC and IP addresses, and export data to CSV file format. General and discovery settingsLanTopolog helps you adjust the background and chart color, clear old log events, automatically run the computer discovery at a certain time interval (in hours), and send notifications when a new MC address is discovered. Configure traffic limits, alarms and pingYou can adjust the threshold of the port speed, calculate the average traffic, and display notification when the average traffic exceeds the configured thresholds. Alarms can be configured to run when computers stop responding. You can make the app play user-defined sound notifications, execute programs/scripts, and send emails. The ping monitoring tool can be used for checking if hosts are available and activating alarms in case the ping test fails. Bottom lineAll in all, LanTopolog integrates a decent feature pack that helps with the discovery, visualization and monitoring of a physical network topology. However, the configuration settings cannot be described as highly intuitive, so rookies may need extra time in order to decode the program’s capabilities.
